After Burner II (SEGA GENESIS) Flight simulator 1990

Sega launched After Burner II, an arcade combat flight simulator game, in 1987. It was launched on the Sega X Board arcade machine as the second game in the After Burner series.

Players pilot an F-14 Tomcat jet fighter in the game, blasting down targets while dodging incoming fire. Burner II was followed by both a normal arcade cabinet and a servo-actuated, sit-down motion simulator version that moved in sync with the plane onscreen. The cockpit would bank in the same way as the airplane on screen. It is an improved version of After Burner featuring throttle controls. It was a financial success, being the highest-grossing arcade game in Japan in 1988.

Development:

After Out Run was completed, work on After Burner II began. Yu Suzuki, Satoshi Mifune, and Kawaguchi produced the majority of the game. To emphasize the project's secrecy, it was dubbed Studio 128 during development. Although an art style reminiscent of science fiction anime films such as Laputa: Castle in the Sky was considered, it was abandoned owing to the team's desire to appeal to a western audience. After Burner II was regarded as a reissue of After Burner, with small additions such as a throttle that was missing from the first game.

Ports:

Following Burner II has been translated and converted to a variety of home systems, including the PC Engine, Sharp X68000, Mega Drive/Genesis, Famicom, FM Towns Marty, Atari ST, Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, and Sega Saturn.
As one of the 3D Classics for Nintendo 3DS, the game was recreated with stereoscopic 3D features.

Reception:

After Burner II was the highest-grossing arcade game in Japan in 1988, tied with After Burner.
Mega ranked the Mega Drive version 38th among the Top Mega Drive Games of All Time. MegaTech magazine appreciated the gameplay's smoothness and speed, as well as the music.

Legacy:

After Burner II was published in Japan as part of the Sega Ages classic series for the PlayStation 2.
M2 ported Sega's 3D Classics series title After Burner II to the Nintendo 3DS eShop in Japan in 2013 and globally in 2015. This version stays true to the original arcade game while adding Touch Controls and screen layouts that mirror the Upright, Commander, and Deluxe cabinets. An unlocked new Special mode was also included, which had a different plot and redesigned stages and employed a time-slowing "Burst" mechanic akin to After Burner Climax. This mode does not include a stage choose or continues, and instead relies on regular acquisition of additional lives throughout the game to complete it.
