Aladdin (SEGA GENESIS) Platform 1993

 

Virgin Games USA created Disney's Aladdin, a platform game based on the 1992 film of the same name. On November 11, 1993, Sega launched the game for the Sega Genesis as one of several games based on the film, including another game for the Super NES released the same month by Capcom.

With four million copies sold, the game is one of the best-selling Genesis titles. It was also ported to a variety of other platforms, including the NES, Game Boy, Amiga, and DOS computers.

Gameplay:

Aladdin by Disney is a side-scrolling platform game in which the player controls Aladdin through locations and a tale based on the film of the same name. Aladdin's primary weapons against enemies are a scimitar for close-range cutting strikes and apples that may be pelted as long-range ammo. The apples are a limited resource that may be acquired in large quantities during the game. A trail of smoke emerging from the Genie's lamp in the top-left corner of the screen indicates Aladdin's health. When Aladdin is damaged by an opponent or an environmental danger, the route shortens. Collecting blue Genie Hearts spread around the stages will replenish your health. A life will be lost if Aladdin runs out of health. Blue vases throughout the stages serve as checkpoints, and if Aladdin passes one before dying, he will be resurrected. Extra lives may be obtained by collecting golden symbols shaped like Aladdin's head concealed throughout the stages. If Aladdin's final life is gone, the game is over. The difficulty setting, which can be changed in the main menu, determines how many lives and apples Aladdin has at the start of the game. Aside from apples, Aladdin may gather diamonds, which he can exchange for additional lives and "wishes" with the Peddler in each level. Wishes allow the player to continue the game from the current level rather of having to restart from the beginning after losing their final life. On rare occasions, "smart bombs" in the shape of Jafar's lamp can be discovered and activated, resulting in the death of all on-screen adversaries.

If the player collects one or more Genie Tokens and completes a level, he or she will be sent to the "Genie's Bonus Machine," a chance-based minigame in which hitting a button awards the player with a random prize such as a jewel, five apples, or an additional life. The number of rounds available in the minigame is determined on the number of Genie Tokens acquired in a level. The minigame will terminate when the player runs out of Genie Tokens or lands on a portrait of Jafar. If the player collects an Abu Token in the first two levels, a bonus level with Aladdin's pet monkey Abu as the playable character will begin after the Genie's Bonus Machine. The player must move Abu left and right to gather diamonds, apples, and extra lives that fall to the ground while avoiding pots, rocks, fish, Iago's relatives, palace guards, and other obstacles. The bonus level is over if Abu comes into contact with a danger.
