Comix Zone (SEGA GENESIS) Beat 'em up 1995

Comix Zone is a Sega Genesis beat 'em up video game that was released in 1995. It takes place within the panels of a comic book, with speech presented in the form of chat bubbles and sprites, and backdrops that feature the vivid colors and dynamic art style of superhero comics. This aesthetic has previously seen in video games, such as Ocean Software's Batman: The Caped Crusader in 1988, but Comix Zone took the concept so far that Sega applied for and was given a patent for a "Videogame system for generating a simulated comic book game."

The game's premise was inspired by Peter Morawiec's 1992 demo video for the Commodore Amiga, "Joe Pencil Trapped In The Comix Zone." It investigates how the gameplay and comic book components will interact.

Plot:

Sketch Turner, a New York City-based "starving artist" and freelance rock musician, is hard at work on his newest comic book, Comix Zone. During a rainstorm one night as Sketch is working on Comix Zone, a lightning bolt strikes a panel of his comic. In this moment, its primary antagonist, a strong mutant named Mortus, leaves the pages of the comic book, wishing to murder Sketch in order to become flesh and blood and take over the actual world. Because he has no authority in reality, Mortus sends Sketch into the realm of his own comic, where he freely draws foes aiming to murder him.

Sketch encounters General Alissa Cyan within the comic book, who believes he is "the chosen one" who has come to save their post-apocalyptic planet from the evil of Mortus and the alien invaders. At the end of the game, Alissa is attempting to disarm a nuclear bomb that Mortus and the Mutants want to use to wipe out the New World Empire and mankind when Mortus reappears in the comic and tosses her into the chamber, which begins to fill with liquid. Comix Zone is an instant success, selling out on the first day and making Sketch renowned as the best-selling comic book of all time.

Gameplay:

Each level has two pages with mysteries revealed by tearing the paper and disclosing things. Sketch, in addition to typical techniques like punching, kicking, and jumping, may carry up to three objects in his inventory to assist him conquer barriers. Sketch may pick up iced tea to recover his health, as well as a fist that changes Sketch into Super Sketch, unleashing a strong strike on all on-screen foes. Roadkill, his pet rat, may uncover hidden goods and get access to regions that Sketch is unable to reach.

Sketch may also rip the background into a paper aircraft to toss at adversaries, although this costs health and can harm Sketch if not done carefully. Sketch must frequently solve puzzles or destroy all foes within a panel in order to proceed through the chapters. Sketch's health is regulated by a health bar, which decreases when he is injured by foes or obstacles. When using a three-button gamepad, button C cycles between the objects while button A activates them.
