The Addams Family (SEGA GENESIS) Platform 1993

The Addams Family is a platform game created and released by Ocean Software that is based on the 1991 film of the same name. It was made available for home consoles like the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, computers like the Amiga, and portable platforms like the Game Boy.

The player controls Gomez Addams in the Mario-style action-adventure game. His aim is to save other Addams family members from the hands of Abigail Craven, who, together with The Judge and the family attorney Tully Alford, is attempting to take the Addams fortune. The player runs, hops, and ducks around the mansion's various secret interior and outdoor regions, and may freely traverse the game like in open-ended titles like The Legend of Zelda (1986) and Super Metroid (1994). Levels have horror stereotype adversaries such as skulls, ghosts, monsters, and others, and bosses withhold a member of the Addams Family, necessitating their destruction. Power-ups, additional lives, and money may also be obtained.

Ocean, a pioneer in the market for video game adaptations of films in the late 1980s, began work on the tie-in for The Addams Family picture in April 1991, before the studio shifted from 20th Century Fox to Paramount Pictures. It was initially intended to be a puzzle video game for computer consoles exclusively. That changed when the studio asked Ocean to create a version for the SNES. As a result, all versions, including the computer version, were platformers with the same plot, location, and goal. The game garnered positive reviews for its visuals, sound, and music, but it was mainly seen as merely another platform with nothing unique or interesting to offer.

Plot and gameplay:

Players take control of Gomez Addams and explore the mansion's different sections.

The Addams Family is a platform game with a side-scrolling action-adventure theme. The plot revolves around Abigail Craven plotting to get The Addams Family's hidden fortune. To do this, she brainwashes Uncle Fester, who has just lost his memory, and is assisted by The Judge and the Addams' family attorney, Tully Alford, who assumes control of the mansion. Morticia Addams, Pugsley Addams, Wednesday Addams, and Granny travel to the home to discuss the property with Tully, only to be abducted within by Abigail. When Gomez Addams returns home, he discovers that the rest of his family has left. Gomez dashes, hops, and crawls his way through the vast house filled with ghosts, mutants, monsters, bats, and bunnies, as well as stage dangers including stars, swinging clock pendulums, and fire lakes to save his family.

The Addams family members must also solve puzzles in order to be saved. Wednesday, for example, is discovered in an ice-themed frozen environment and it is up to the player to figure out how to thaw her out, while Granny is locked in a stove that is switched off by a switch the player must find. Many doors in the Amstrad CPC game can only be accessed by keys concealed throughout the estate. The underground chambers must be opened in most versions to save Morticia; Lurch performs a melody in the Music Room that triggers it, but only after Wednesday, Pugsley, Granny, and Uncle Fester are saved and meet up in the room. The game's last boss is The Judge.
