3 Ninjas Kick Back (SEGA GENESIS) Platform 1994


3 Ninjas Kick Back is a 1994 platforming game developed by Malibu Interactive and published by Sony Imagesoft for the Super NES and Sega Mega Drive (ported by Psygnosis) exclusively in the United States to coincide with the same-named 1994 film.

The game was originally planned to be released individually for the platform, but it was packaged with Hook in the 3 Ninjas Kick Back / Hook compilation for the Sega Mega-CD.

Story:

Mori, a master samurai, entered a ninja competition fifty years ago for a mystical dagger and an old samurai blade considered to be the key to unlocking a hidden cave rich of treasure. Koga, the master's archrival, stole the dagger after winning the tournament and legally obtaining it. Despite his extensive search, the master never discovered Koga or the dagger. Now that he is too elderly to continue looking, the master sends his three grandkids, the youthful brothers Rocky, Colt, and Tum Tum, whom he has educated in the ninja skills, to aid him in obtaining the treasured dagger. Once returned to its original owner, the dagger will be passed down to future generations via the winners of the ninja tournament.

Gameplay:

The game is a side-scrolling action platformer in which you play as the film's three youthful ninjas. It may be played by two players at the same time, with each controlling a distinct character. Each level's purpose is to reach the finish or to achieve some other pre-explained task, such as destroying certain targets or collecting goods. On these levels, a counter in the bottom-right corner indicates how many objectives remain.

The three brothers play identically, but each has a unique set of weapons and special skills. Tum Tum, the younger brother, carries a pair of sai. He is the tiniest and the quickest. Rocky, the eldest brother, wields a stick. He is the slowest yet the most powerful. Colt, the middle brother, wields a katana. His characteristics fall in between the other two. Ninjas walk with their left or right foot and crawl with their down-left or down-right foot. They squat with Down and leap with B. By pressing Up while jumping in front of them, they can grip ropes and platforms (including branches). They can use Up+B to lift themselves up a platform and Down+B to leap down. They use Up and Down to climb ladders. In some stages, players can use Up to hide in the backdrop and evade enemy missiles.

The ninjas use A to attack with their weapons, which can also be done while crouching. They kick in midair to attack. By obtaining a Blue Crystal Ball item, their attacks can be momentarily boosted with ranged shots: Tum Tum fires a single tiny sai, Colt shoots three daggers in a spread, and Rocky shoots three shuriken in a spread. With Up+A, the ninjas perform a special defense technique in which they swing their weapons in the air while standing still. Each ninja also has a particular ability that they may do with A+B in which they jump into the air while whirling their swords. Using this ability, however, costs one point of health. Ninjas can also find explosives in the levels, which they can use using C. Bombs are in short supply. Bombs can occasionally be used to blow open hidden pathways.

The ninjas have five hit points and lose a life when their hit points run out or the timer expires. They resume the level from the first or last checkpoint. When one player dies in a two-person game, he does not respawn until the other player dies or completes the level. If the players run out of life, the game is over. Extra lives are rewarded every 10,000, 25,000, 50,000, and 100,000 points, followed by 100,000 points every 100,000 points after that. There are three levels of difficulty (Easy, Normal, and Hard). Each level in Easy mode has its own password.
