Dragon Ball Z - Buyuu Retsuden (SEGA GENESIS) Fighting 1994

Dragon Ball Z: Buyuu Retsuden (ドラゴンボールZ 武勇烈伝 Doragon Bōru Zetto Buyū Retsuden, lit. Dragon Ball Z: Fierce Bravery Legend) is a Dragon Ball Z fighting video game. It was launched on the Mega Drive in Japan in April 1994. On June 1994, a French version of the game called Dragon Ball Z: L'appel Du Destin ("Dragon Ball Z: The Call of Destiny") was released in some European countries, and the Japanese version was also sold in Portugal, packaged with a regional converter (Mega Key III), but the game was never translated into English or released in America.

Overview:

Buyū Retsuden plays and looks quite similar to previous video games in the Butden series published for the Super Famicom.

The plot appears to be closely based on different Dragon Ball Z anime events, but in a "what if?" sort of approach (for example, Android 18's tale already has her married to Krillin, while Krillin's story has him defending/disabling her from being absorbed by Cell).

Gameplay:

The game is your standard fighting game. Holding the different controller buttons together allows you to perform A punches, B kicks, Up leaps, and many combo actions. The C button toggles between staying on ground and flying through the sky.

The game's unique feature is that both characters are always on-screen at the same time, allowing the game to do vertical split-screen with scrolling, rotating split screen, and other neat tricks the Mega Drive was not known for (accomplished using various tricks with VDP layer management). Some of the greatest maneuvers (which need both players to be far apart) really require this capability.
